FRP Pultrusion Technology and Application

Apr 13, 2023

FRP pultrusion forming process is a composite material forming technology for producing composite material profile products. It is the most mechanized production process in composite material forming technology, so the production efficiency is extremely high.
There are two processes in pultrusion molding: one is to impregnate the fiber material with the activated resin, and then it is pultruded to extrude excess resin through a heating mold, and the resin is cured and formed by heating in the model, and then stretched out. The other is to pull the reinforcing fibers over a heated mold at a constant pultrusion speed. At the same time, the initiated resin is injected into the mold to fully impregnate the fibers and solidify the gel. The former method requires a resin system with a longer pot life, and the latter method requires a resin system with a shorter pot life. The resin molding pressure is 0.1-0.5Mpa.

Composite pultrusion technology has greater flexibility and less investment in equipment than steel manufacturing technology, and it can produce profiles with more complex cross-sectional shapes to meet the needs of more uses. The density of composite pultruded profiles is lighter than that of aluminum, and they have high specific strength and specific modulus.
The resins used in the pultrusion process mainly include unsaturated polyester resins, vinyl ester resins, epoxy resins, phenolic resins, thermoplastic resins, etc.
In addition to the corrosion resistance, aging resistance, and insulation properties of traditional FRP materials, pultruded FRP manufacturing also has the characteristics of stable product size, good appearance quality, and high production efficiency. Because of these excellent properties and characteristics, it has been applied in more and more fields, and has a very broad market at home and abroad.

With the development of pultrusion technology, the quality and performance of pultruded profiles have been greatly improved, and larger size structures and more complex shapes can be developed. Therefore, its application has been fully expanded, and pultrusion products are widely used in many fields such as construction industry, electric power gas insulation industry, chemical anticorrosion industry, transportation industry, sports entertainment, etc.

Pultruded profile products have the following excellent characteristics: high strength, adapt to environmental requirements, low water absorption, low thermal insulation coefficient, low deformation rate, etc.
Because of the above excellent characteristics, pultruded FRP products are widely used, examples are as follows:
• Civil and engineering fields: guardrails, greenhouses, fences, window frames, greenhouse frames, roof decoration materials, bridge components, sunshade and rainproof ceilings, stair handrails, tunnel ventilation windows, house partition wall panels, sidewalk bridges, concrete Templates, scaffolding, sound insulation walls, avalanche prevention sheds, etc.;
• Electrical: Cable brackets, ladder frames, brackets, insulating ladders, insulation rods for transformers, etc., motor slot wedges, accessories for lighting, lampposts, antenna masts, suspenders for live maintenance overhead lines, electric power, radio towers, optical fibers Cable core material, etc.;
• Land transportation: refrigerated truck components, truck structural parts, bus side wall panels, trailer floors, bus exhaust pipes, luggage racks, direction signs, seats, etc.;
• Corrosion-resistant equipment: communication supporting equipment, electric power supporting equipment, chemical equipment, water treatment equipment, brewing equipment, sewage treatment plant cover, corrosion-resistant storage tank protection frame, scrubber assembly components, aquarium inspection corridor, cooling tower bracket, Sucker rods, offshore oil production equipment tires, etc.;
• Leisure and entertainment: bows and arrows, fishing poles, tent poles, operating rods for sailboats, surfboard components, sailboat tension components, snowboards, combined swimming pool side panels, snow boats, balance sticks, golf clubs, etc.;
• Ocean-related fields: ship tanks, pipes (including minesweeper fuel tanks, coastal lampposts, ship keels, ship railings, handrails, stairs), floating docks, ship grilles, etc.;
• Aircraft interior decoration products: firing materials, shelves, etc.;
• Agriculture: fences for livestock pens, fences for poultry houses, greenhouse frames for planting, support members, pillars for frost-proof nets, rattan fences, water tanks for irrigation, etc.;
• Other fields: flag poles, bed components, tool handles, etc.;
Pultruded FRP products have a wide range of applications and are the most ideal materials to replace wood and steel. It has a relatively large application proportion in the fields of electrical, land transportation, corrosion resistance, construction civil engineering and building materials, and the market prospect is relatively broad.
